The ECDC is an EU agency that has been created to help strengthen Europe’s defences against infectious diseases, such as influenza, SARS and HIV/AIDS. In November 1985, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute ( NHLBI http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/index.htm ) launched the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP). The goal of the NCEP is to contribute to reducing illness and death from coronary heart disease (CHD) in the United States by reducing the percent of Americans with high blood cholesterol. Through educational efforts directed at health professionals and the public, the NCEP aims to raise awareness and understanding about high blood cholesterol as a risk factor for CHD and the benefits of lowering cholesterol levels as a means of preventing CHD.

The NCI is the Federal Government's principal agency for cancer research and training. The National Cancer Act of 1971 broadened the scope and responsibilities of the NCI and created the National Cancer Program. Over the years, legislative amendments have maintained the NCI authorities and responsibilities and added new information dissemination mandates as well as a requirement to assess the incorporation of state-of-the-art cancer treatments into clinical practice.
